Silver Jewelry 101

by Erwin Rostuzing

Silver jewelry has been popular since ancient times, and it shows no sign of falling out of favor any time soon. Silver is so popular for very good reason. It can easily be adapted to fit with any wardrobe or fashion style and it can be dressed up and dressed down easily. Silver looks great with your best dress and it looks great when you throw on jeans and a t-shirt. The price for silver varies greatly as well - silver itself, though a precious metal, is less expensive than gold or platinum, so the price depends very much on what other stones and materials are used along with the silver in the jewelry design. Learning more about silver is a great way to get the best silver jewelry you can find.

What Exactly is Silver?

In its most pure form, silver is a soft metal. The metal in fact is so soft, that pure silver is not sturdy enough to be used for jewelry. That is why you see the label “sterling silver” on jewelry so often. Silver that is used in jewelry is mixed with a kind of alloy to increase its strength, hence the sterling silver name. Sterling silver is perhaps the most popular metal used in jewelry in the world.

Finding the Best Silver Jewelry

Like any kind of jewelry you buy, when it comes to getting the best silver pieces, you have to look for a company that specializes in silver jewelry. One of the best companies out there for silver is Anixi Jewelry. They specialize in selling handmade sterling silver jewelry pieces, from everyday jewelry to the kind of jewelry you want for a special occasion.

With Anixi Jewelry, you don’t have to worry about making a mistake and getting the wrong piece. They want you to love the jewelry you get from them, so they back up each and every piece of jewelry in their stores with a 30 day, money back guarantee. If you decide you should have gone fancier with your jewelry, or that you were not pragmatic enough, all you have to do is swap that jewelry out for a piece that you do want.

Another good option for silver jewelry is The Jewelry Store. This company specializes in sterling silver jewelry from all over the world, so you can get unusual silver pieces with lots of style and flair.

Taking Care of Silver

If you want to keep your silver shining bright, look for a dedicated sterling silver cleaning product. The cleaners you use on silver must be low abrasive and phosphate free to keep the metal from discoloring. Never use an abrasive cleaner on your silver - you will scratch the surface.

Understanding the Lap Band Procedure

December 23, 2008 | Leave a Comment

by Amy Nutt

The Lap Band Toronto surgical procedure is one of the fastest growing bariatric surgeries in North America. Because it is far less permanent and invasive than other bariatric surgeries, many obese individuals are choosing it as an option when other weight loss strategies fail. Some even turn to the procedure before trying more conventional weight loss options. The Lap Band device was approved for use in the United States in 2001, although it has been being used successfully in other areas of the world since 1993. For Canadians seeking a surgery center that uses Lap Band, Toronto has several to choose from.

How the Procedure Works

Lap Band surgery is technically called laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. The goal of the surgery is to help the patient achieve significant weight loss by limiting the amount of food that the stomach can hold at one time. Other bariatric surgeries involve actually changing the size of the stomach, or bypassing portions of the stomach altogether. Lap Band surgery is different, because it does not cut the stomach at all.

Instead, this surgery makes the stomach smaller by placing a silicone band around the upper portion of the organ. The band is a hollow tube that is filled with sterile saline, which makes it completely adjustable. It creates a pouch where the food that the patient eats enters to begin the digestive process. The pouch has an opening that allows the food to flow slowly into the rest of the stomach. This opening can be made smaller or larger depending on the patient’s needs by changing the amount of saline in the band. The band is put in place laparoscopically, which reduces much of the trauma on the body caused by stomach stapling or rerouting procedures.

After the patient is under anesthetic, the physician will begin the procedure by making several small incisions into the abdominal wall. The instruments for the surgery are inserted through tubes placed in these incisions. One such tool is a camera that shows the physician what is happening inside the body. Using small surgical instruments, the band is put in place and secured around the stomach. Once it is in place, the instruments and tubes are removed, the incisions are closed, and the surgery is complete.

Weight Loss After Surgery

The weight loss surgery creates a small gastric pouch at the top of the stomach. This pouch limits how much food the patient can eat. It also slows down the rate at which the stomach can empty into the intestines, effectively slowing the digestion rate. This allows the patient to feel full for a longer period of time.

Sometimes patients who have Lapband surgery do not experience enough weight loss or lose weight too rapidly. Either problem can be resolved by adjusting the band to allow more or less food through the opening. Adjusting the LapBand device is simple, because an access port is placed just underneath the skin during the surgery. A thin needle can add or remove saline from the band through this port whenever the patient’s doctor thinks it is necessary, and this procedure takes just a few minutes to do.

Weight loss for patients who have Lap Band surgery occurs for two reasons. First, the patient is eating less due to the smaller size of his stomach and the fact that he is feeling full longer. Second, patients who have this procedure done must carefully consider what they eat for its nutritional value, because they are eating much less than they did before. This helps to control weight as well, since healthy foods are chosen over junk foods. Because of the minimally invasive nature of this weight loss surgery, coupled with the high rate of success for patients who have it done, many obese individuals are choosing Lap Band surgery as their permanent weight loss solution.

Weight Training Routines, Shoulders

by Ricardo d Argence

Shoulder development is very important when you are bodybuilding. A double back bicep pose not only makes you look great while doing it, but it also make you look wonderful while standing erect. If you develop your side deltoids in proportion to the biceps, the arms and biceps look large and well defined.

The shoulder area consists of the muscles of the posterior, medial and anterior deltoid. The rotator cuff muscles and the upper trapezius are included in the whole shoulder girdle.

The deep rotator cuff muscles connect several parts of the thoracic region to the back, side, or front of the humerus. Upper trapezius muscles are the muscles that run from the back of the neck; extend to the medial deltoid, then downward to intersect with the middle trapezius. Going further back on the shoulder, below the lower portion of the upper trapezius, is the posterior deltoid muscle. The outer part of the shoulder is a where the medial deltoid lies, with the anterior deltoid muscle being visible outside of the pectoral muscles.

Each shoulder has a specific function when lifting the arm. The anterior deltoid is responsible for bringing the arm forward, inward and for rotating the arm. The medial deltoid allows the arm to move away from the side. The posterior deltoid comes into play when the arm moves back or rotates outward. When the scapula is moved upward toward the ears, like shrugging your shoulders, the upper trapezius muscle does the job. Lastly, the muscles of the rotator cuff stabiles the arm during movement and allow the arm to rotate.

There are a number of exercises that will effectively build the shoulder area such as the military press, lateral raises, lying lateral raises, the Arnold press, behind the neck press, and bent-over lateral raises. The upright row in addition to bent-over rows will also help you build the shoulder area to magnificent proportions.

Indicative to building massive shoulders is the knowlege of how they work and are kept healthy. Injuries can quickly slam the brakes on any progress you are making, so take extra care to avoid them. One of the most common injuries is to the rotator cuff muscles. Rotator cuff muscles are not particularly large or strong muscles. Try to prevent injuries by including some band work into your shoulder exercises.

To minimize injuries be sure that you are using the right amount of weight. You should be able to have control of the weight through the entire movement. If you find that you can only do partial reps or you need to shift the weight around, then the weight is too heavy. Using too much weight puts too much stress on the shoulder and is likely to cause injury. Be sure that you can maintain the proper technique and use the full range of motion before increasing the weight.

Although building up shoulder muscles takes a bit of effort, bodybuilders concur that the result justifies the work involved. Because each body grows at its own rate, research and patience are vital.

A Good Health Weight Loss Diet

December 21, 2008 | Leave a Comment

by Ada Denis

There are two natural methods to lose weight: exercising and dieting. Both methods have intrinsic positive qualities and can work well when done properly. A combination of the two methods, however, is the fastest and most effective way to get back into shape. What this means is that if they are to make you thin again and at the same time, help you achieve good health, weight loss diet programs should combine both exercise and dieting.

Now, the problem with this is that good health, weight loss diets, and sustainable exercise routines only work well in theory. In real life, they don’t. This is because they require huge amounts of self-discipline - something that few people have.

If dieting, exercising, and changing your lifestyle are too much for you, your most logical option is thus a health weight loss diet. The tricky thing is to determine which, among the hundreds of options, is the best weight loss diet program for you. As it is, there are numerous misconceptions about dieting. For one, many people limit their intake of fat, carbohydrates, and calorie. This strategy could work but it is more likely to backfire.

Aside from being too difficult to follow, this particular method of dieting can only make things worse for you as you will crave for more low carb, low fat, and low calorie foods once the momentum passes. So you see, deprivation is not the best route to take to lose weight. Rather, moderation is key. After all, we need fats, carbohydrates, and calories in our diet. We can only go so far with very little intake of all three before our bodies start to complain about the nutrients it is missing out. Once this happens, you are most likely to go back to square one of your weight loss battle. Or worse yet, things could nosedive and you may even gain weight instead!

Why not try calorie shifting? This is only one of the techniques you will learn in the ‘Idiot Proof Diet’. Calorie shifting does not require you to eat less. Rather, it requires you to eat more - but of different food varieties. This is because your metabolism works according to a pre-established pattern. Once you shock it by deviating from this pattern, it will become more efficient and aggressive at burning calories and later on, stored fat. Remember, you can be thin without sacrificing your health. Weight loss diets should not make you skinny at the expense of your well-being.

Reviews of the Firm Wave

December 21, 2008 | Leave a Comment

by Carol J Bartram

Many of my clients have seen the Firm’s Wave Personal Gym and have asked me to review it. They know I have a similar piece of kit called the TBow and thought I would be the ideal person to advise them on the Wave. I was curious to see if the Wave was any good for the average at home exerciser.

The T-Bow and the wave are both curved to enable them to be used curved side up or down. If placed curved side down it’s unstable and you can rock on it. If placed the other way you can stand on it and use it like a step. This way you can use it to step up and down (a normal step), enhance your stretching routine, with a cheap exercise band add many strength training exercises and by using only your body weight you can so exercises like press-ups, squats and lunges.

Turn the Wave over and place the curved side down and you have an unstable platform from which to rock or walk your way to a fantastic fat burning workout. You can also perform a rocking movement which really hits the spot, use the Wave length ways and walk your way fit, strengthen Abs and core and use it with a resistance band to make your workout more challenging.

One of the Wave’s claim to fame is that it can burn three times as much fat as other pieces of cardio equipment. Hmm three times as much I can’t say but it will give you one of the hardest and most challenging cardio workouts you’ve ever had. As a beginner I would expect you to be sweating and breathless in less than 5 minutes.

Considering you can do over 100 exercises on the Wave including fat burning cardio, strength training and sculpting it’s a well rounded piece of equipment. The Wave comes with 4 DVD’s to ensure you get the best from it, an exercise mat, The Firm’s Wave, wall chart and a healthy eating guide. All for less than $100. Compared to the TBow it’s not as well constructed but for home use this won’t be a problem.

Don’t be tempted to think this is just another exercise gimmick it’s not. The Wave will do exactly what the manufactures claim with one proviso. To get the claimed results you actually have to use it! Like any piece of home workout equipment if you leave it under the bed gathering dust it just won’t work. You’ll lose no fat, burn no calories and you won’t get that strong and toned body you desire.

Why follow the herd. Do what thousands of smart people like you have done. Ride The Wave and enjoy the fat loss you deserve.
